Most business owners wait until the end of the year to find out how their business has done. But, in leaving it so long, some find out that they’ve also left it too late.
Ideally, you should know on a monthly basis exactly where your business stands.
Why? Because, for instance, if your costs have skyrocketed, your sales have declined or your regular customers are spending less, you need to take action – preferably as soon as possible – to stop the negative cycle. And, on the positive side, if your sales have increased – let’s say because of an advertisement you ran – then you certainly need know, so that you can run the ad again – and again and again!
Highly successful business owners are those who use their monthly data to grow their business. Every month, at the very least, you should know:
- Monthly sales
- The value of your average sale
- Net and gross profit percentage
- Your cashflow position
- A breakdown of your sales (i.e. what percentage of the month’s sales is attributed to particular services/categories of products you sell)
- Details of outstanding debtors
There are many more, but with just these few figures, you will be able to access your business and take action to improve your situation and grow your business.
